Mazatapec originated in the Oaxaca mountains in central Mexico and was ceremoniously used by the Mazatec people, an indigenous group living in the area. They used the mushrooms in sacred ceremonies to connect with spirits and the divine, but also to heal their ailments. Fast forward to the 1950’s, researcher R. Gordon Wasson traveled to Oaxaca to study and write about the Mazatec tribe and their mushroom ceremonies. While there, he met Maria Sabina, a Mazatec medicine woman. She taught him about the mushrooms and their uses. Mazatapec becomes the first Psilocybin species introduced to the Western world.
