It is the type species of section\u00a0<i>Zapotecorum<\/i>,<\/p>\n<p><b>Description<\/b><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><b>Cap (Pileus):<\/b>\u00a020\u2013100 mm diameter (can be quite large for a psilocybin mushroom). Conic to convex, expanding with age to broadly convex or nearly plane. Brown to yellow-brown when moist, strongly hygrophanous, fading to whitish, grayish, or pale straw when dry. Smooth, viscid when moist due to a separable gelatinous pellicle. Often undulating or irregular with age; translucent-striate when moist.<\/li>\n<li><b>Gills (Lamellae):<\/b>\u00a0Adnate to adnexed. Pale to brownish when young, turning dark purple-brown at maturity. Edges whitish due to sterile cells.<\/li>\n<li><b>Stipe (Stem):<\/b>\u00a080\u2013200 mm long \u00d7 3\u201310 mm thick; robust compared to most\u00a0<i>Psilocybe<\/i>. Whitish to yellowish or brownish, often darker toward base. Smooth to finely fibrillose. With conspicuous white rhizomorphs (rope-like mycelial strands). Strong blueing reaction when handled. No annulus.<\/li>\n<li><b>Spore Print:<\/b>\u00a0Dark purplish-brown.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><b>Microscopic Features:<\/b><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><b>Spores:\u00a0<\/b>Large, subrhomboid to subellipsoid, strongly inequilateral in side view. (10.5\u2013)11.0\u201313.0(\u201314.0) \u00d7 6.5\u20138.0 \u00b5m. Smooth, thick-walled.<\/li>\n<li><b>Basidia:\u00a0<\/b>20\u201328 \u00d7 7\u20139 \u00b5m, clavate. Mostly 2-spored, occasionally 4-spored.<\/li>\n<li><b>Pleurocystidia:\u00a0<\/b>24\u201335(\u201340) \u00d7 6\u201310 \u00b5m, lageniform to subutriform, with narrow neck (3\u20135 \u00b5m wide), abundant.<\/li>\n<li><b>Cheilocystidia:\u00a0<\/b>22\u201332 \u00d7 5\u20138 \u00b5m, similar to pleurocystidia, lageniform to utriform.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><b>Ecology &amp; Distribution<\/b><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><b>Habitat:<\/b>\u00a0Saprotrophic; grows on rich soils in subtropical and tropical cloud forests, often near stream banks, landslides, or disturbed forest edges.<\/li>\n<li><b>Range:<\/b>\u00a0Widely distributed in Mexico, Central America, and South America (including Brazil, Colombia, Ecuador, Peru).
